Continuing Education Is Very Important

We learn as long as we live. We learn from each others, we learn from books, we learn from nature, but most of all we learn from our experiences. Education is the experience which forms the mind and the body. Without it we would not be competent or we would not be able to face all the challenges that life presents.

Education is a process through which we accumulate knowledge, skills and competencies. Continuing education means improvement, capability, performance, competence. It represents a way of permanently being up to date, that is to keep up with new developments, new challenges, and new technologies.

Generally, continuing education is intended for adults, being a process of acquiring new skills, competencies and knowledge, in addition to those assimilated during school, in order to improve the quality of life, for personal fulfillment or for employment. Adults choose various forms of continuing education either for personal or professional development, obtaining certificates or licenses which are extremely useful for the employment or for practicing a particular profession. Continuous education is compulsory in most of the careers, companies and organizations paying for the continuing education of their employees.

There are various types of continuing education such as training, workshops, conferences, seminars, coaching, job-shadowing, mentoring, online courses. It can be traditional or extremely interactive, orientating the participants to problem solving and making them actively participate and find solutions. The programs of continuing education can last for few days, week-ends, weeks or months.

Considering the fact that continuing education is important for both each and every individual and organization, it can occur in every field and sphere of knowledge. We can take courses on organizational communication, leadership, human resources, personal and personnel development, management, finance, health and safety, industry, information technology, sales, marketing, public relations, linguistics, business etc. All these and more others being characterized by the acquisition of extremely useful knowledge, skills, competencies and by the issuance of various certificates which are extremely important in our careers.

Taking the example of the information technology, which presents itself with daily challenges, adults can follow courses on computer literacy, IT products and services, and IT services management which is vital in business. ITIL, for instance, offers solutions regarding the improvement of IT services, in order to increase the customer' satisfaction, the productivity and to develop skills and performances. Such certifications are the keys for every individual and organization which invests in its personnel in order to gain performance and be successful.

Insurance Continuing Education - Building Elevation Information

BUILDING ELEVATION INFORMATION (SURVEY REQUIRED)

The responsibility of providing a number of elevations based on the building type selected is that of the surveyor, engineer, or architect.  From these elevations gathered, the agent is required to determine the lowest floor for rating flood insurance.

The surveyor, engineer or architect should complete Section C, but if it is left blank, the agent should contact the responsible person who completed the form and the insurance company underwriter with any questions.

Elevations of machinery and equipment servicing the building (water heater, furnace, air conditioner, etc) must be provided, regardless of its location, whether inside or outside of the building, elevated on platform or not elevated.

Where the surveyor, engineer or architect cannot access the crawl space, an estimate on item C2 may be left blank and the estimated measurements entered on the comments section (Section D).

Elevations in Section E are based on feet, except in Puerto Rico, where it is metric and the agent must convert any readings to feet.

SURVEYOR, ENGINEER OR ARCHITECT CERTIFICATION

Section D is the certification of the surveyor, engineer or architect that the information provided by them is correct and their signature and identification number are required—in some states, a seal may be required.

Why You Need Nursing Continuing Education Courses and Certification

Nursing education courses could land you a job that is as recession proof as any job could be in today's economy. That's because the healthcare industry is the largest industry in the United States and it's still growing faster than any other industry, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). BLS, the government agency that collects and analyzes employment statistics for the country, expects that healthcare will be the biggest job creator through at least 2016. Among all healthcare occupations registered nurses will be in most demand.

Because these jobs require specialized training you will need to take courses to qualify for the career you want. You will probably need some type of license or certification. To get a job as an R.N., for example, you will need a diploma, an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree, or a master's degree in nursing. Diploma programs take two or three years to complete. Numerous colleges, universities, nursing schools, and private schools offer associate degree programs, which also take two or three years to complete.

You can become an R.N. without having a bachelor's degree. Graduates of diploma and associate's degree programs often go on to study for their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), however, because many jobs, including teaching, research, and administration, require at least a BSN. R.N.s with associate's degrees may earn their BSN through RN-to-BSN completion programs, an increasing number of which are offered online. Nurses typically take continuing education courses while they work. In fact, many hospitals reimburse tuition for their employees who are studying for their BSN.

To gain a license a student must graduate from an approved nursing program and pass a licensing exam. Registered nurses must also become licensed in the state in which they work. Licensing requirements vary by state. License renewal requires nursing continuing education courses, which help nurses learn new skills and keep up-to-date in their profession.

Several important nursing specialties require registered nurses to gain national certification and/or state or national approval, which requires study beyond the BSN. These include clinical nursing, forensic nursing, nursing case management, legal nursing consulting, stress management, nurse-midwifery, and nurse practitioner.

As with most professions, higher nursing education usually translates into higher salaries. According to BLS the median starting salary for registered nurses with their BSN is over $50,000. With ten or more years of experience, the median salary is over $65,000. Salaries vary considerably by location (highest in California) and specialization (highest for nurse anesthetists with master's degrees).

In addition to rising salaries and job security, nurses can expect good benefit packages that typically include paid vacations and sick leave, tuition reimbursement, and pension plans. Because of the ongoing shortage of nurses, many hospitals offer recruitment incentives such as signing bonuses, relocation and housing assistance, and day care.

Due to medical advances and an aging population the demand for skilled nurses will continue to increase over the foreseeable future, providing nurses with opportunities for well-paid, rewarding, and secure careers.

Continuous Medical Development through Continuing Medical Education

Medical research is the basic research, applied research, or researches conducted to aid and support the body of knowledge in the field of medicine. Medical research can be divided into two general categories: the evaluation of new treatments for both safety and efficacy in what are termed clinical trials, and all other research that contributes to the development of new treatments. There is a growing demand for medical education in and among today's generation. The need for innovative medical strategies has not been higher.

Thanks to Continuing Medical Education (CME) this is possible. CME refers to a specific form of continuing education (CE) that helps those in the medical field maintain competence and learn about new and developing areas of their field. These activities may take place as live events, written publications, online programs, audio, video, or other electronic media.

Content for these programs is developed, reviewed, and delivered by faculty who are experts in their individual clinical areas. Similar to the process used in academic journals, any potentially conflicting financial relationships for faculty members must be both disclosed and resolved in a meaningful way.

With limited information on actual return on investment for expenditures toward support of activities, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are anxious to understand the value of CME support and strategies for ensuring investments provide appropriate impact on healthcare practitioner behaviors and patient outcomes.

How does the medical research community understand the value of CMEs? Through reports and studies compiled using benchmark metrics and executive insights to assess current trends and future directions of CME in countries to map a path to future success in support of CME.

Certain organizations compile reports that cover important questions such as what is the current landscape of CME in North America and Europe, structural forms that are used to deploy CME, optimize budgets & best deliver content, pace at which is E-CME advancing, preferred CME delivery channels and the current trends and future directions of CME.

The answer to these questions are a result of research based on benchmark survey data and executive interviews of 30 participants from 26 pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical education companies. The reports contains uncovered findings on medical education such as decentralized management structures are most common across the global CME landscape and that the internet delivers on average between 10-25 percent of global CME content.

Make an educated decision on the future of medical education and medical research by looking at these unbiased benchmark reports.

Continuing Education for Fashion Designers

There is no underestimating the importance of continuing education for fashion designers. In order to stay competitive in this field, one must always be on the cutting edge of the latest fashion trends, but knowing what's in style this season is just the beginning. Fashion designers must also be on the cutting edge of the latest methods, techniques, industry standards, materials, tools and tricks. If you're a fashion designer, you should definitely expect to refresh your training every few years or so; otherwise, you might find yourself being left behind.

Creative Options for Creative Minds
There are many different continuing education options for fashion designers. If you are a self-trained designer, you could benefit from any level of training. Even if you're already working in the fashion field with a reasonable level of success, you could still benefit from a professional certificate program, associate's degree or even a bachelor's degree in fashion design.

If you already have a certificate or associate's degree, your previous coursework would probably count towards the next level of education. By increasing your formal training, your skills will become more refined, and you will understand certain techniques much better than you did before.

Even designers that have bachelor's degrees and have done their training with prestigious fashion designers can still benefit from a little continuing education. A refresher course every few years is always helpful to stay on the cutting edge of the latest color palettes, lines, patterns, materials, textures, sewing machines, pressing equipment and other design tools. Art and design courses can also be helpful for fashion designers of any level, because they encourage creativity and help strengthen skills in sketching, color combinations, pattern making and more.

As a fashion designer, you may also want to invest some time in your continuing education if you are thinking of switching to a different career within the fashion field or if you simply want to open up your job options. These are a few of the other jobs in the fashion industry that you might consider training for:
Accessory Draper
Buyer
Clothing Store Manager
Consultant
Costume Maker
Fashion Research Analyst
Image Consultant
Personal Stylist
Production and Development Manager
Retail Merchandiser
Technical Designer

You may think you know it all, and if you're smart enough to build a career on self-taught skills, you probably do. However, formal training is always going to help you take it to the next level.

Understanding Careers That Require Continuing Education

If you are in the process of making a career choice or thinking about a career change, there are a lot of things to consider. You need to find an option that will provide you with enough income to pay your bills and support your family. Ideally, you will choose a career that is fulfilling and brings you some happiness, even if you experience occasional boredom or burn out. Finally, you must find something you are willing to commit to, especially if you opt for something that requires continuing education. Some people work in environments where you have the occasional meeting or consultant came in to give you tips on performing better. But there are other jobs that require a day or more each year of continuing education. These fields require greater commitment because you must continue to learn and grow as your profession changes. Scottsdale jobs in CNA, San Diego jobs in CNA and a variety of other medical careers which require continuing education, as do many other positions.

Teaching is another field in which you will need continuing education.

Typically, states set up requirements and teachers must show proof of their classes or workshops to continue to teach in the classroom. Schools often schedule continuing education so the teachers in their building are able to get their continuing education credit all at once. If you are a parent and notice your child is off for an in-service day, this is probably your child's teachers get continuing education.

Similar to teaching is the childcare field. While childcare providers may not need as much continuing education as teachers, they are still required to turn in a certain number of hours or credits each year.

Again, the state regulations vary from one state to another but most require that childcare providers stay up to date with theories, lessons, safety issues and discipline techniques. Continuing education is also a great way to feel rejuvenated about your work and go back into the classroom or learning environment with a renewed attitude and spirit.

Sometimes, sales positions require continuing education. There are typically no government regulations, but your company may require you stay up to date with sales techniques and information about your product. Your employers will more than likely pay for this continued training because it will help you on the sales floor, ultimately making them more money.

Regardless of your profession and its requirements, continuing education is a good idea. Those who are self-employed should seek out opportunities to continue to grow so their business is more successful. Even those who do not work to earn a living and spend their time caring for their children can benefit from continuing education. If you are employed and you think continuing education may benefit you and your success, consider speaking to your employer about opportunities. Chances are; they will be happy to hear you are eager to grow and learn as an employee. Those who are not employees should look into the benefits of enrolling in continuing education on their own.

Fostering Innovation With Healthcare Continuing Education

Knowledge and practices in the healthcare domain evolve continuously. According to industry experts James Morrison, E. James Kelley and Carl Lindsay, approximately 50 percent of the knowledge obtained in medical school becomes obsolete in five years. Due to this nature of the job, healthcare continuing education becomes imperative for medical professionals, particularly doctors, nurses and dentists. In fact, patients' well-being and lives often depend on these professionals keeping abreast with the advances.

Benefits of Healthcare Continuing Education

Healthcare continuing education, besides enabling maintenance of competence, allows skill enhancement without committing too much on time. Besides, you also have the flexibility in choosing the course or curriculum that captures your interest; or what you believe is most pertinent to your current expertise.

Other key benefits of continuing learning are:

1.Training by industry leaders: Content for continuing education programs are developed and delivered by experts.

2.Diverse education modes: Classes are delivered as live events, online programs, written publications, audio, video and other electronic media.

3.Flexible curriculum: Full discretion to choose subjects that are not directly linked to your field.

Therefore, besides honing your specialization, you can gain a perspective on other related fields as well. These additional skills can help you undertake wider responsibilities.

4.Facilitates networking: Healthcare continuing classes enables you to meet other professionals from your field and expand your network. Also, you get ample opportunities to attend workshops and conferences, bringing you in direct contact with pioneers.

Hence, the benefits of continuing education do not stop in the classroom.

Most importantly, many states in the United States mandate healthcare continuing education for medical professionals for maintaining their licenses. For instance, Arizona requires professionals need to have around 40 hours of continuing education every two years.

To enroll in a superior healthcare education program, visit www.certificationplus.com. The site offers a diverse range of healthcare courses, from nursing and medical billing to radiology dentistry. Besides saving on time you also obtain reasonably priced and highly interactive medical course credits. The aim at Certification Plus is "to take the sometimes challenging course material and dispense it in a varied, easy to retain manner."

Dental Continuing Education - A Normal Part of the Job

No professional career is ever complete. Getting dental continuing education is merely a part of the job that you are required to do. Every different state has different rules for the continuing education, so it is important that you become aware of what you need when you seek out your licensing for the first time. The continuing education will likely be discussed in your original training, and will also be reaffirmed from time to time by your state board and/or the ADA, depending on where you live and what the requirements are.

Taking the time to get dental continuing education can prove to be a challenging task when you've got a full time job and a life outside of your career. The best thing about CE requirements is that aside from tools training and procedure updates, all the training that you need can be done online nowadays. That means less making time for training and more time enjoying your life outside of work.

You'll be able to complete almost every continuing education program from the comfort of home or wherever you are without having to spend as much on the course itself or travel and time off work that was once required for continuing education training.

Dental continuing education is nothing special. The purpose of it is to keep everyone up to date and to keep information current. In something as important as dentistry, you can never have too much outdated information because that could be detrimental to your work and practice in many different ways. If you take the time to check out what your specific dental CE requirements are, you might be surprised to learn that it's fairly simple to complete in the allotted time that you are given.

Although the requirements vary by state, you're not required to complete so much continuing education that it is overwhelming.

You'll only need enough dental CE to keep you informed. In a couple of states, it's not even required at all. However, as a professional that is striving for success, you'll likely want to do whatever it takes to get all the training that can improve your career and give you much better chances for success in the long run. Keep these things in mind when you're in the market for continuing education and you'll have no troubles getting exactly what you want and need from your CE courses.

Psychology Continuing Education: What You Should Know

When it comes to psychology, continuing education is the name of the game. For many professions, you learn everything you need to know in school. After graduation, you may be surprised at how little you need even that. In other fields, what you learn on the job is far more important than the theory you picked up in college. For the soft sciences, however, it is a combination of both. Not only must your theory and fundamental background be firm, you must be able to seek out and assimilate any new knowledge that advances your understanding. For psychologists, this is not just good advice; it is a requirement to remain licensed.

As you might expect, psychology continuing education requirements vary from state to state. Some states have very few requirements in place and more or less allow the doctor to choose their place of accreditation. Other states have stringent requirements and insist that individuals choose from their acceptable learning materials. If you're planning to practice and be licensed in a state, you need to keep up with those requirements. They may be very different than the ones where you came from.

In addition to placing varying demands on the amount of credits you must obtain in a period, state licensing boards have different requirements when it comes to the type of courses you may take. It's not uncommon for a state to have its pet issues that it feels are important. For instance, in Florida you'll find the state requires more domestic violence training for its psychologists. Other states may require more drug abuse training.

One good thing about going into the field now is that you'll have more choices and flexibility than ever before when it comes to deciding where to complete your psychology continuing education. Online classes, workshops, and multimedia presentations open up another world of possibilities. There are still plenty of real life opportunities as well, for those who learn better in a classroom environment.

One final note: keep your records straight. It's not uncommon for a person to take credits, lose the paperwork, and find out that those credits won't be counted towards their psychology continuing education requirements. Don't let this happen to you. Keep your paperwork in a secure place and make sure everything is well organized. Don't ever depend on the learning institution to take care of it for you. If they do live up to their promises, so much the better. If they don't, you have the backup.

Expand Your Knowledge And Job Skills With Continuing Education

Did you know that Continuing Education was actually deemed by researches more of a necessity and less of an option in today's workplace? Therefore, employees are encouraged to participate in continuing education courses to simply keep up with their areas of expertise, which, in most professions, are developing due to technological advances and other such leaps. However, Continuing Education isn't just for those who are already working in their desired position, this part-time option is also suitable for those who are not able to attend college on a full-time basis due to other priorities.

So where can you find a reliable School of Continuing Education? Look no further than Toronto's own Centennial College. With nearly 22,000 learners each year in 160 programs that feature more than 1,200 courses and have a 97 per cent learner satisfaction, it is clear that Centennial College has an amazing grasp on what students look for from their continuing education option. The school's learner-centred teaching methodologies, mature environment and the understanding of the needs of adult learners by experienced faculty are just a few of the reasons why this School of Continuing Education is so successful.

With the many program options at Centennial College's School of Continuing Education, there are varying prerequisites. Also, please be advised that within certain programs there may be qualification requirements and costs for external accreditations, designations, certifications or recognitions. These are set by the granting bodies and not by Centennial College. In order to qualify for any of those external accreditations, designations, certification or recognition, students and graduates will need to follow the processes and meet the applicable requirements listed on the websites and materials of those external bodies. You'll be able to find more information about this when you apply online for the Continuing Education program of your choice.

Centennial College's School of Continuing Education allows you to take on your area of interest through formats such as part-time, evening, weekend, online and alternative courses. Whether you want to improve your skills, further your education or just pursue a topic that interests you, all courses are designed to be convenient to your specific needs. For example, you may choose to study in the school's fully equipped facilities on evenings and weekends. This will see you learning into a classroom setting, where practical hands-on knowledge is provided through group projects, presentations and labs. If, however, this doesn't appeal to you, you can opt for the School of Continuing Education's Distance Learning feature, which allows you to learn online from your personal computer, whenever is convenient for you. This type of learning is designed for a more independent learner. However, all Continuing Education options have one thing in common: They get you results.

Supply Jobs Enable Continuity

Supply jobs are crucial to any company, keeping the flow of their materials and/or services moving in order to facilitate production, be it of a product or a service. Without an even supply of the necessary raw materials, production will grind to a halt, and the sales department will be left with nothing to sell.

The description of ""supply jobs"" covers a broad spectrum of skills and disciplines, from procurement (the people responsible for placing the purchase orders for the raw materials, products and services), to the stores and stock control personnel, (whose job it is to oversee, facilitate, and manage the actual movement of these important goods), not forgetting those involved in the actual logistics of moving the products from one location to another, too.

There is also another aspect to supply jobs, away from the industry and manufacturing sectors, and this is in education.

Supply teacher jobs are however no less important in education than they are in commerce. Within the education sector supply teacher jobs provide teachers the opportunity to act as reserves, always on call to fill a gap at any teaching establishment, when other teachers fall sick or other circumstances prevent them from attending. A supply teacher is one who is trained, ready and able to stand in at short notice to ensure the smooth continuity of the education supply to the scholars. It is an important role, and one in which you can gain maximum job satisfaction.

There are also many other specialist jobs within the overall supply jobs market; take aviation supply jobs for example. With aviation supply jobs, quality and timeliness are of paramount importance. When you are responsible for supplying components for aircraft, quality performance is a prerequisite.

The failure or under-performance of any such part, could be responsible for causing a crash, resulting in fatalities, so in this particular industry, quality is the ""watchword"" and to land specialist jobs in the supply chain function of the aviation industry, you will need to have the appropriate ISM (Institute of Supply Management) qualification, being a CPSM which stands for a Certified Professional of Supply Management.

If you are a talented supply professional, then a job as a supply coordinator may be the right vehicle to showcase your skills. The supply coordinator role is one in which you have to manage all ends of the supply chain (including of course logistics), to ensure that the goods you are managing, turn up in the right quantity, at the right moment, and in the right place. It's all about anticipating problems anywhere in the supply chain, and then developing and implementing alternative strategies to mitigate for things going awry. This has become even more complicated and demanding, given that the global marketplace has now firmly arrived, with goods being sourced from all points of the globe. To be a successful supply coordinator, you will need to have considerable skill and talent at scheduling, and you should be familiar with all of the latest computer enhanced methodologies.

Supply jobs are varied and interesting and challenging. Check out the vacancies in your area and make this your career option. There is good money to be earned, and the prospects are excellent.

Registered Preparer Continuing Education Requirements

The IRS is making sweeping changes in the tax preparation industry in order to ensure that only qualified individuals serve the public. Preparers will now have to obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), accrue a certain amount of continuing professional education (CPE) and pay the annual $64.25 fee.

Registration Guidelines

Every individual that would like process tax returns after December 30, 2010, will need to obtain a PTIN. The requirement is all encompassing, so it applies to employees of tax preparing businesses as well. For those that already have a PTIN, registration into the new IRS system is still required in order renew the number. Registration capabilities are expected to begin in the middle of September 2010.

Competency Testing

Competency testing must be completed (and successfully passed) in order to receive a PTIN. It provides an individual the ability to complete Form 1040 series returns. Two different tests will need to be taken within 3 years, which will cover:

Wage & Non Business 1040

Wage and Small Business 1040 (Schedules C, E, F and related forms)

The exams are scheduled to be available in the middle of 2011. In the future, the IRS plans to have additional testing and instructions for other forms.

At this time, the IRS has not yet determined the mandatory passing score for the competency testing. Other details, such as the components of the exam, testing procedures, locations and the applicable fee have not yet been established either. However, a registrant will have the ability to take the test an unlimited number of times.

Any person that does not complete this requirement within the designated period will have their PTIN deactivated and will be taken off the list of registered preparers.

Continuing Professional Education CPE

Each PTIN holder will need to complete 15 hours of tax CPE in order to maintain his or her registration in the IRS public database. It is important to note that tax preparers should wait until January 1, 2011 to begin accruing their CPE credits, as any tax courses taken before this date will be ineligible to meet the IRS requirement. The curriculum must consist of 10 hours of Federal Tax Law, 3 hours of Tax Changes/Updates and 2 hours of Ethics CPE.

Exceptions

An exception to the mandatory testing exists for attorneys, enrolled agents and CPAs (enrolled actuaries and enrolled retirement plan agents are included only if their tax preparations are within their limited practice area). It is important to note that if one of these types of practitioners is not active and in good standing, then they will be subject to competency testing.

To qualify for an exemption to the CPE requirement, a tax return preparer must be an attorney, CPA, enrolled actuary or enrolled retirement plan agent. Registered or licensed public accountants in certain states are deemed to hold the same rights as a CPA and do not have to take the exam or meet the CPE requirements.

While conferences and conventions may not have the same structure as taking classes online or in a classroom, they do provide dentists with valuable information to take back to their practices. There are several speakers that talk about different fields of dentistry and provide new concepts and ideas for participants to think about. Psychology Continuing Education: Why Workshops Work So Well

Workshops, both online and in real life, have always had a major part to play in the realm of psychology continuing education. Few other methods of teaching give students the chance to interact and have a concentrated period where only a small portion of their field is delved into on a deep, meaningful basis. These kinds of sessions provide key perspectives that can be difficult to come across in traditional media, such as books and DVDs. Some of the most noted experts in the field have lent their broad experience to these workshops, intent on bettering the state of the social sciences.

As anyone involved in the field knows, psychology continuing education is a requirement in almost every district as a prerequisite to remaining licensed and employed. Today, there are many options out there for the professional in the field. Online opportunities abound, as do in-person classes. But nothing quite compares to the workshop. Through a workshop (which can last anywhere from four hours to an entire weekend), you can mix and mingle with other professionals while learning at the feet of someone who is at the top of the field.

Anyone trying to advance in their careers knows how important it is to network with other successful professionals in their field. Not only can you learn from others, you can make contacts that can help you move forward and find better career opportunities. At the very least, you can bounce ideas of others in the profession and see if you can't learn better ways to treat your patients. You might think online workshops don't afford that opportunity, but you would be wrong in many cases. True, it isn't quite the same dynamic, but you can still make contacts and the exchange of ideas is often faster and more complex in a written environment where people are free to link off to their favorite resources.

There are dozens of ways to fulfill your psychology continuing education requirements, so why not do it in a way that can be fun, rewarding, and memorable. No one said that getting CEs had to be boring and dry. If you found your field to be boring and dry, chances are you would have chosen to go into something else. The best workshops lift that veil and bring excitement back to psychology and the social sciences. Find a good one, sign up, and see for yourself that earning credits can be just as enjoyable as your first heady days at University.

Enrolled Agent Continuing Education Aids in Explaining the AMT

The Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) sneaks up on unsuspecting taxpayers who then need advice about how to avert it in the future. This requires having some understanding of how the tax works and why only some taxpayers are subject to it. Fortunately, enrolled agents can take advantage of these situations as opportunities to expand their tax practices.

People want experts to explain particularly complex tax subjects. By promoting the knowledge you retain from enrolled agent continuing education, you certainly qualify as an expert to the public.

The AMT is a separate tax system from regular income tax. Under the AMT, tax is calculated according to a distinctive set of rules regarding income and deductions. When the tax determined using AMT rules is higher than tax assessed under the regular tax system, taxpayers owe the additional amount.

The ethics CPE of tax professionals teaches you to assess all tax payable, including any for the AMT.

Any taxpayer owing tax due to the AMT who doesn't pay is liable for penalties and interest. An enrolled agent should calculate potential AMT for all taxpayers with income above ,000 having a lot of personal exemptions or deductions.

An enrolled agent studies the AMT process in a CPE course. The AMT is calculated by completing IRS Form 6251, which adds disallowed deductions and extra income to the regular income tax calculation. Some of the likely situations where taxpayers owe AMT involve exercising of incentive stock options, ownership of a vacation property, and holding extensive investment interests.

The AMT disallows deduction of interest on home equity loans. Also disallowed under the AMT is investment interest expense that exceeds investment income other than interest and dividends.

Items counted as income under the AMT but not the regular tax system include the market gain on incentive stock options, interest earned on private activity bonds, and gains on the sale of qualified small business stock.

Because the AMT is a completely different tax system, it affects carry forward losses and basis. Therefore, an enrolled agent is valued for maintaining records a taxpayer will eventually require. For example, stock acquired by exercising incentive stock options may have a different basis under the AMT when sold. The AMT also reduces the deduction of passive activity losses and thus the loss carried forward to the time of property disposition.

These situations create long-term relationships between taxpayers and enrolled agents in order to accurately make future AMT adjustments.

Tax Continuing Education And The New Healthcare Rules

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act includes changes in the delivery of health insurance and several new income tax provisions. The implementation of these new rules over several years is a major focus oftax continuing education for Enrolled Agents and other tax professionals.

Coverage Changes

Starting in 2010, an adult child up to age 26 who is unable to obtain health insurance from an employer may remain covered by the employer plan of a parent. This replaces the common insurance company provision of not covering any child who reaches age 19 and is not a full time student.Tax CPE courses address how this provision may affect claiming older children as dependents.

Also new for 2010 is a provision that health insurance coverage for children cannot be denied solely because of pre-existing health conditions. In addition, health insurance coverage for anyone can no longer be terminated as a consequence of illness.

Policy maximums have also been eliminated beginning in 2010. Insurance companies are barred from instituting lifetime caps on coverage.

Starting in 2014, insurance companies cannot deny coverage for pre-existing conditions. This provision requires a pooling of risk involving mandatory coverage for everyone. Failure to obtain coverage beginning in 2014 will incur fines based upon individual incomes. Financial assistance will become available for families earning up to ,200 per year. State operated insurance exchanges in 2014 will provide coverage options in addition to private insurers.

For those who have been denied coverage in 2010 due to pre-existing conditions, coverage is available through state-operated high-risk pools. The maximum out-of-pocket cost under this coverage is ,950 for individuals and ,900 for families.

Starting in 2010, Medicare beneficiaries no longer have out-of-pocket cost for preventative care such as physical exams, testing for treatable conditions, and laboratory work. In addition, the federal government will send 0 to those covered by Medicare to cover prescription drug costs not currently covered by Medicare Part D.

However, those with annual incomes of ,000 (0,000 on joint returns) incur a reduced prescription drug subsidy in 2010. In addition, government subsidies for Medicare Advantage plans are being reduced so those covered by such programs face higher premiums. To assist in tax return preparation, aregistered tax agent must inquire about whether clients received their 0 checks.

Tax Provisions

Continuing professional education (CPE) has several areas to address relating to changing health care rules.Tax CPE courses include information on the new tax credits and additional tax assessments.

Tax credits are available for individuals who purchase health insurance through a state-operated exchange. The tax credit program begins in 2014, when each state is required to have established an exchange. The premium assistance credit is available for households with incomes between 100 percent and 400 percent of the annual poverty level. Upon enrollment, individuals will report income to the exchange. A premium assistance credit is then calculated and paid by the federal government to the state. The insured individual then pays the difference between the premium and the credit.

Individuals who fail to maintain health insurance coverage in 2014 will be subject to tax penalties. Tax professionals will learn in their CPEethics course that, beginning in 2014, an employer with at least 50 full-time employees during the preceding year must offer all full-time employees and their dependents minimum essential coverage under an employer-sponsored plan. Failure to meet this requirement results in a fine for the employer if any eligible employee enrolls in coverage under a state exchange for which a premium tax credit is allowed to the employee.

To assure coverage exists from employer-provided plans, annual W-2 reporting beginning for the 2011 tax year requires disclosure of the value of each employee's health insurance provided by the employer.

Small businesses with fewer than 25 employees and average wages of less than ,000 are eligible for tax credits beginning in 2010. The credit is up to 50 percent of employer contributions for health insurance premiums. Employers with fewer than 10 employees and average wages of less than ,000 receive a 100 percent credit. Wages paid to five-percent owners of a business (or 2 percent of S corporation shareholders) are excluded from the average calculation.

In addition, business are required beginning in 2012 to report on Form 1099 all payments aggregating 0 or more in a calendar year to a single payee, including corporations (other than a payee that is a tax-exempt corporation).

For 2010, the maximum adoption credit is increased to ,170 per eligible child. This increase applies to both non-special needs adoptions and special needs adoptions. Also, the adoption credit is made refundable. The new dollar limit and phase-out of the adoption credit are adjusted for inflation in tax years beginning in 2011.

The tax on distributions from a health savings account (HSA) or an Archer medical savings account (MSA) that are not used for qualified medical expenses is increased to 20 percent, effective in 2011.

Continuing education tax deductible topics include a new threshold for itemized medical expenses. Beginning in 2013, the threshold is increased to 10 percent of adjusted gross income. The present threshold is 7.5 percent of AGI.

Also beginning in 2013, a new Medicare tax is effective for taxpayers with income of 0,000 or more (0,000 for joint tax returns). This is a major change that is being addressed intax continuing education. The tax is 3.8 percent of the lesser of investment income or a modified adjusted gross income calculation. For self-employed taxpayers, the same additional Medicare contribution applies to the Medicare component of the self-employment tax on income in excess of the threshold amount.

In 2014, flexible spending accounts (FSAs) will have lower contribution limits. The new maximum amount allowed will be ,500. In addition, fewer expenses will qualify for FSA spending. For example, an FSA withdrawal will no longer be available to cover the cost of over-the-counter drugs.

However, employees may use a cafeteria plan for paying premiums under a health care plan offered through a state-operated exchange. This affects employees who receive group coverage through an exchange option provided by their employer plus have cafeteria plans. This provision is also effective beginning in 2014.

Higher Education Abroad Continues to Rank in India

Higher education abroad continues to rank at the top of student aspirations. In the first of a series of articles on the subject, we address the academic, financial and cultural issues that foreign- bound students have to confront. India’s growing stature as an educational hub may provide fabulous opportunities for foreign universities, but for a significant number of students in the country the attraction of quality higher education overseas only getting stronger.

Figures available with educational consultants show that nearly two Lakh students apply for courses, including short- term and refresher programmes, around the world every year.

What accounts for this magnetic pull at a time when leading international universities are inking deals and eyeing closer collaboration with their counterparts in India? And are students getting the most out of their investment on overseas education?

Students benefit immensely in terms of their personality development, outlook and thinking from an exposure to an academic programme at a reputed foreign university.

International education indeed is cutting edge because the curriculum is updated at regular intervals.

But what really drives students to look abroad for higher education opportunities is the serious shortage of quality education in the country. The demand for higher education in India is far greater than the number of institutions imparting it. This forces students to look for other avenues and studying abroad is one of the top choices.

Business Studies, IT, Biotechnology and Engineering continue to be the most sought after programmes, and the majority of Indian students who enroll for these programmes prefer to work abroad before returning home. How North Indian students gravitate more towards Business Studies and IT, but their compatriots from the south opt for science and engineering courses.

Only a small percentage of students return to India immediately after finishing their studies because they wish to gain international exposure and experience to enhance their employability. Only 10-15 per cent of the students return to India because of family obligations. The majority gets a job in Canada itself. But this story is without its warts and bumps. One of the major hurdles students face in their quest for an overseas education is demonstrating their financial resources.

India have a thriving parallel economy that hinges on undeclared money, so a large number of students find it difficult to furnish details of necessary financial support. This leads them to take to fraudulent means, which can close their doors to overseas education forever. Once finances are taken care of, students make a beeline for the five English speaking countries that top their list of higher education destinations — US, UK, New Zealand, Australia and Canada — though the number of them actually going to these countries varies from time to time because of changing visa rules and threat perceptions.
